What can you do to make sure that your child doesn’t develop cavities and gum disease?pediatric dentist

As parents, we want only the best for our little ones. Of course, one of the most important things we can do is to provide them with the care they need to stay healthy. Our Lubbock, TX, dentists Dr. Jimmy Hill and Dr. Camie Davis are here to answer all of your burning questions regarding pediatric dental care and how to keep your growing child’s smile healthy.

You know your child needs to brush and floss just like you do, so we don’t need to tell you that these are habits you can’t forget. Of course, we know that these habits can be difficult to get your child to adopt so here are some things you can do to make the process a little easier,

Make Oral Care Fun

Okay, before you roll your eyes, there are ways to make this twice daily routine more fun. Get your child involved by having them pick out their favorite toothbrush and toothpaste. There are so many fun characters and wacky colors out there that can make purchasing a toothbrush fun for your child. Even toothpastes have zany, delicious flavors that will make your kid more eager to brush.

Lead By Example

Make their oral care routine a family activity by having everyone in the family brush and floss at the same time. After all, kids love to mimic their parents. If you show that you take time to care for your teeth and gums, your child will be more likely to adopt this habit. Set a timer and get the whole family brushing for two minutes.

Limit Sugar

We know that it can be tough to get children to eat healthily but it’s important to limit how much sugar they are getting in their diets. You would be shocked how much added sugar is in foods you wouldn’t even expect like salad dressings or cereals. Check all labels and avoid processed foods and sodas. Opt instead for healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables and cheese, which are good for teeth and gums.

Visiting the Dentist

It’s important that all children visit our Lubbock, TX, dentist every six months for routine cleanings and exams. These exams will ensure that your children are free of cavities and gum disease, that they are reaching all of their dental milestones and that their at-home routine is up to par.
